Sophie Taeuber-Arp

Born 1889 – Died 1943

Born in Switzerland, Sophie Taeuber began her career studying textile design and modern dance, before moving to Zürich in 1915. It was here that she met Dada artist (and future husband) Jean Arp. During this period she was an active participant in the Zürich Dada group, designing sets, costumes and puppets for their performances at the Cabaret Voltaire. From the late 1920s, Taeuber-Arp lived in Paris, working on a number of architectural and interior design projects. During the 1930s, she turned her attention to abstract paintings and wood reliefs, aligning herself with the artistic groups Cercle et Carré and Abstraction Création.
