Robin Philipson

Born 1916 – Died 1992

Philipson was born in Lancashire. He grew up in Gretna and attended the Edinburgh College of Art (1936–40). After war service, in 1947 he joined the teaching staff of that institution. Initially, he had looked to Scottish painters such as John Maxwell and William Gillies for inspiration, but later, a claustrophobic, colour-saturated Expressionist idiom characterised his style. Philipson was President of the Royal Scottish Academy from 1973. He died in Edinburgh.
