Laura Algar

Laura joined Kettle’s Yard in May 2022 as Assistant to the Director & Programme Support. Having studied Fine Art at Kingston University, she spent ten years working in London holding various curatorial and arts administration positions at ATLAS Gallery, Roman Road and the Serpentine Galleries, alongside her own research practice. Her return to East Anglia in 2021 saw her undertake a long-term interview project with interdisciplinary practitioners and cultural producers across the region, supported by Arts Council England.

Most recently at Serpentine she worked as Curatorial Assistant for James Barnor: Accra/London, A Retrospective (2021), and as Editorial Assistant for the accompanying exhibition catalogue. Previously, she worked on exhibitions of work by contemporary photographic artists Natalia LL, Thomas Mailaender and Antony Cairns, alongside presentations of work by Magnum photographers Ian Berry, Bruno Barbey, and Ernst Haas. In 2015 she worked closely with artist and academic Floris Neusüss to produce Light Works, a group exhibition focussing on the development of the photogram, starting from its roots in Dada circles through to current explorations by contemporary artists.

It has to be Vardanega’s Disc, hung in the leafy bridged space between the cottages. If you stand still you’ll soon notice it’s in constant motion, and as objects and environments swing in and out of view within the Perspex lens, there is a fleeting epiphany of the balance achieved across the internal and external – the natural and the manmade; which just seems to be the most fitting analogy for the Ede’s approach to the House as a whole.
