Helen Frankenthaler
Born 1928 – Died 2011
Frankenthaler was born in New York. Having trained at Bennington College, Vermont, she became one of the defining artists of American Abstract Expressionism. Her work is characterised by the use of paint directly onto the unprepared canvas. This style, known as ‘soak stain’, was imitated by other artists and was instrumental in the creation of ‘colour field’ painting.
